This post started when Mayor Vance Trively of Randolph, Iowa announced a $5 bounty for each stray cat or dog to be turned over to a vet to be "disposed of".

for those of you who don't know me, i am a former feral and wuz just a few minutes away from being "disposed of" when a wonnerful furriend intervened and saved me. many of my friends in the Cat Blogosphere are former ferals also.

this post has been redone many times because links keep changing and info is reposted.

  2. Did you see the comments there from Lee Davis? Some people are going to cash in on the bounty just for extra spending money! See http://www.randolph-iowa.com/Default.aspx

  8. I would not like a bounty on my head. Do the woofies have a bounty on their head too? What about the human kids? They can get pretty wild sometimes too.

  10. Have those airheads never heard about the TNR (trap neuter release) program?
We will get into action immediately!!!
Don't forget to check out our blog during the next 5 days - we are on a St.Patrick's Day adventure in Ireland!!!

  11. After I reported the case to the Humane Society I actually googled Randolph Humane Society and it seems they do have the HUmane Society there but the local director is just a jerk who also never heard of TNR.
    Those people need serious education!
But what can you expect from Iowa. The butler grew up there and he recently encountered a case of serious illegal censorship, concerning art.

  12. We've been reading some of the news stories. Some townspeople wanted to shoot or poison the cats and the mayor told them they couldn't do that "in town".
They keep emphasizing a lack of funds to condone killing these animals.
The article stated the captured animals would be held at a vets office for a "period" of time, and if unclaimed, would be euthanized. That has to cost money to board and feed and then put to sleep.

  13. Meowm sent an email urging the mayor to take Alley Cat Allies up on their offer! Lets hope this idiot listens!

  14. Alley Cat Allies states that "...the government leaders of Randolph, IA do not have access to fax or e-mail. Please voice your opposition by printing and mailing the letter below." There is a link with a form letter all ready to send out... please consider using this.
    Thanks,
    ML & the Sherwood Bunch

ps: it's a good thing some of the town members have and use computers so we could learn about this situation.

  17. This is the address of the mayor in Iowa who is responsible for the horrible bounty hunt:

    The Honorable Vance Trively
    PO Box 88
    107 S Main
    Randolph, IA 51649-0013

Supposedly he doesn't have internet access.....? But it is always effective to send real letters anyways - we did.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Okay that is the most horrible thing I have ever heard. What are they thinking of?

    ReplyDelete
  19. We hope da mayor of that town slips on a ginormous hairball and breaks his neck - then he will ahve to be disposed of. (oooops, did we say that out loud?)

  20. FYI, back up a few comments I posted a link for a form letter. It's been updated now it only works if you are a resident of Iowa. See the post, I've updated the links, there is a petition to sign if you are not in Iowa. All these new resources are from Alley Cat Allies.

Also, check Thursday's Cat Blogosphere (as usual), Deb is working with Alley Cat Allies on another cat threat in the DC area.

  21. In your Egyptian Mancat Monday post, what was that about killing anyone who hurt a cat? I know just the mayor to stand at the front of the line!

    ReplyDelete
  22. How can that mayor POSSIBLY think TNR won't work? What happens when people snatch up every cat they see for the $5, stripping collars and tags from pets? And I just read what I've suspected, that it's impossible to tell the difference between a feral and a frighted pet when it's snarling at you from a cage. I don't know when I've been so angered by a "public" policy! I could spit and hiss, and I'm a bean!

  23. KC had posted earlier that if Randolph does get rid of all the cats, they will probably be in trouble come spring. They'll be overrun with mice and rats and snakes.
I just wanted to re-post it here.

There have been so many good comments and observations from all of KC's furriends, so how come a cat isn't mayor?

  24. From the Desk of Diamond Emerald-Eyes:

I have had several of our residents call about the increasing number of human politicians in town. I was decided to get our citizens to help with this problem by putting a $50.00 bounty payment for the catching and delivering live or dead to me, any politician you can find, loose or otherwise.

The politicians will be taken to the Vet at Sidney for DISPOSAL.

This offer does include Chey, Skittles the Huntress or other felines or canines running for president.

  26. Mom ML asked us to add this:

Here's the email address for the city of Randolph randolphcity@iowatelecom.net. We're not sure who gets the email, but it's worth trying to send an email to the mayor! And our Mommy emailed PETA (info@peta.org) about the situation, hopefully they can lend some help!

We've got to get this things stopped!

  30. This is a letter I sent to the Iowa people.

    Dear animal hater,
I think what you are doing is wrong. There Are MANY more people that agree with me on this. I would hope that you will come to realize this. All animal owners will hate this and consider their pet part of the family not just some dumb animal. If you own an animal and it gets out someone could take that animal to get the $5.00 bounty. So what if there is a collar on the animal, what is going to stop someone from taking it off for five bucks? I would like you to stop and think.... what about people? If there are people living on the street and can not get better lives are you going to put them to sleep as well? All that needs to be done is to have the cats dogs or whatever animal it is taken to a vet and have them fixed. Animals are not always to blame either. There are many cruel people out there. People who take an animal and don't care for it and just let them go. That is no fault of the animal. The animals of the world don't ask for that type of life.
Just like people they are given that hand. I know for a fact sometimes you just get dealt a bad hand in life. The animals can not change like we can so because of that you are going to kill them? These are my thoughts and feelings I know for a fact there are many more people that feel the way I do. You need to stop this CRUEL bounty crap. This also makes you town look really bad. I know I would never want to move there if this was the law or rule. I have cats and if they can't go out I don't know how either human or animal would deal. With all this going on you have to stop and think who is the real "animal" here.
    Sincerely,
Danielle (a VERY concerned citizen of the U.S.A.)

  36. We're so happy it ended well! Alley Cat Allies are wonderful people. They're the ones who provided the traps and the money for the TNR for the feral colony where we were born. The 3 of us got caught in one of their traps, though the Lady kept us instead of releasing us back because we were only 2 months old and adorable little fluffballs. The rest of our colony was relocated a few blocks away and they're happy, healthy big fluffballs. Our people see them lots, but they're too feral to pet. TNR is a very good thing!
