A Tribute to Mommy Scarlett

Today is the anniversary of the day Mommy Scarlett rescued her five kittens from a burning building -- March 30, 1996. After the fire was extinguished, the fire fighters watched as a badly burned Scarlett retrieved each precious baby before passing out herself.

One of the kittens died a few weeks later. It took three months for Scarlett and the four kittens to be well enough to be adopted.

Mommy Scarlett went to the Bridge in October of 2008. See the full story on The Cat's Meow by Skeezix.

This poem was written by Rosemary Asmussen in tribute to Mommy Scarlett:

Why is everyone so surprised
That I saved my furry five;
That in spite of pain and danger
I brought them out alive?
True my eyes were barely open
But I heard their frantic wails;
Through smoke and flames I saw
Scorched ears and burning tails.
Every trip was a burdened choice
But I could make no other.
The rescuers have called me cat -
But I am also "mother."

Easy Like Sunday Morning

Auntie Deb hugging Sol yesterday. Note the absence of a body brace!

We had so much fun talking to Miss Peach's Mom Karla yesterday, we talked for hours. Doesn't Miss Honey Bunny look like Seaborne?

Today we will hopefully talk to Mary Lynn, Mom to Grace, Audace & Ruse. We are planning a road trip to see them soon.

Thankful Thursday

Daddy Charley is very thankful to have a "teknickle" cat like KC to help him use his computer. Here, KC shows her daddy how to "rip and burn" files.

Tabby & Tortie Toosday

KC sleeps in her famous "180-degree Monty twist".

Lovely Missy naps inside her "house", which is the base of a cat tree.
Look at those laser eyes!
Casper -- her "nose twin" -- has a great new cat tree much like this one...
see it here...
the last photo of that post is him leaving his "house".

Everything is healing just fine. The ankle wounds were very deep and are still inflamed and sore as is the left ring finger. Still on oral antibiotics and ointment.
Have nightmares of hearing and seeing poor Smokey hanging by his little leg.
We have tied up all of our blind cords so that will never happen again.

An ECard from Smokey

Isn't this the sweetest thing ever? Smokey emailed me a card.
(click to biggify)

We've been back like nothing happened for days and days now. Smokey is my little "shadow" again, following me everywhere. He sleeps snuggled by me and keeps giving me head butts and kitty kisses all night, which he didn't do before.

I got a gorgeous card from Casper's Mom, too. It was so sweet. Rest assured, Smokey's purr-sonality is not hurt at all. For about 24 hours after it happened, he was in shock. He must have been totally freaked out to the point where he turned on me and on his brothers and sisters. I feel so sorry for him, for having blind cords where that could even happen.

Again, thank you so much for all your purrs and woofs and concern. And sharing your stories really helps.

Wednesday

Thank you for all the purrs and comments and support.
It really, really helped.

Smokey is snuggling and cuddling with me again, although it took some coaxing to get he and his brothers to stop sulking.

I am feeling so much better. The wounds are healing, bruising has set in, and much of the pain is gone. I can almost use my hands again.

The only problem is the ankle area, there is a big lump above the ankle so you can't even see an ankle. I will see Dr. Bob tomorrow morning, just to be sure it is healing correctly and there is no damage.

Monday Monday

Isn't this cute. Actually, I called him "Freddie Kruger" right after it happened, because of the number of wounds. But Smokey Scissorhands just has a great sound. And Smokey has sort of a Johnny Depp look.
I's keeping a close eye on mine Mommy ML.
She's purrty beat up.
They's counted 35 bites on hers right foot. Tha deep bites are above tha ankle, them's tha ones tha damaged a little tendon or sumfing. You's can't effen see an ankle it's all so swollen an red.
There's 22 bites on her right hand, plus scratches.
There's just 7 bites on her left hand, but one almost went thru the ring finger -- at the joint -- on bof sides. It is really swollen and red.
Daddy Charley is taking her to Dr. Bob in tha morning even though hers can barely walk.
Smokey is just fine.
He tries to sleep right up against Mommy, but I pushes him back an I sleeps right next to her. I's follow mine Mommy effurrywhere right now, just to be sure hers okay.
Mommy snuggles wif Smokey, hers unnerstands him was crazy wif fears. Him's acting sorta sheepy, so she gifs him extra attenshun.
Fanks fur all tha purrs.

**************
Update: Daddy Charley didn't get Mommy up fur hers appointment.
Good noos is that effurryfing looks much better except fur tha place where hers ankle was. She made Daddy Charley promise he's take her in to Doktor Bob tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.

Cat Attack

KC posted this comment on the Cat Blogosphere earlier today:

Mommie ML is resting, Smokey attacked hers. She can’t use hers right hand, it’s bitten thru in places. And hers ankle is gnawed thru, hims almost bit thru a tendon. Hers gotted a lot of others bites, all puncture wounds.

It reminded us of Tesla, but we can’t quite member tha dee-tales of what happened.

Smokey gotted hims back leg caught in tha blind cord and was hanging. Hims was screaming like effurryfing. Mommy ML tried to pick him up to cut tha cord and he latched onto her an didn’t let go. It’s been a few hours an him still won’t go near anyone. Him’s leg seems okay, he can walk wifout limping.

Swelling has set in and my left ring finger, which was bitten at the big knuckle on both sides, won't bend. My right hand has a half-round set of toothmarks on the palm, and on the other side, near the pinky. That pinky and ring finger are also bitten at the first joint and swollen and unbendable. My right arm has various deep tooth marks and the wrist bone was gnawed.

My right foot had the ankle gnawed, possibly damaging one of the small tendons (or something that really hurts when I put pressure on it). There are bites between several toes that seem to go all the way thru. The inside back heel has several large bites that tore. I'm just glad I had socks on!!!

For the smallest cat of the bunch, he is an intrepid little fighter. He was crazed and terrified. Looking back, I should have controlled my emotions and not run to help him. I was blinded by the horrible crying noises he made. I should have realized how frightened he was. The mini-blind cord had wrapped around his back leg and he slipped off the windowsill. He was hanging about two feet off the floor, head down.

If anything like this ever happens again, I will approach with either full body armor or a heavy towel or blanket.

I just had a tetanus shot and still have the antibiotic ointments from my encounter with Momma Dinah (Smokey's mom). Dr. Bob called in some antibiotic and pain meds. I am resting with all my mangled parts elevated and iced.

When I just woke up, Smokey was pressed beside me, like he usually is. Plus Sol and BJ and KC. They all give me these "sheep-ish" looks.

Faith Boo has not come out of the closet since it happened. She said something about teleporting over to Billy SweetFeets house to "playplayplay" and then snuggle. Then she did a tortie blush.

Thanks so much for all the purrs and advice.
